  • On my way to Osaka Japan, and can probably get better than US prices on the Mamiya stuff. Would appreciate ideas or comments as well from those with experience with the above mentioned cameras. Haven't shot the RZ camera and haven't figured out if its what I need for large wall portraits, my understanding is the digital back will be similar to 645 crop. If I get the digital back, I still have the option of renting another camera or if the digital back goes back for repair, I can always shoot film and scan. I figure the camera will have some inherent limitations ie shutter life and if I need to get it repaired I'm outta work for awhile. I like the idea of the zd camera for ease of packing and travel, but I wonder if it would not be a better idea to get the back. My question is do I wait for the Mamiya ZD camera or do I get the 645AFD and back and use my current mamiya manual lenses or jump to the RZ67pro11d with back. My S2pro has been a real champ, got nice 30 x45 prints on canvas from this camera with a little work. Had good luck with my S2pro for portraits and travel. Real delima now, I put my M645pro on the shelf two years ago to go digital. Thanks in advance for sharing your experience and thoughts on the Recommend the Mamiya 645 AFD or Contax 645 AF ? Why? Wondering if any one has experience with both cameras? I'm hopingĪt some future date to get a digital back. If you do have budget - go with H1D Hassy and don't look back. Mamiya generally always was cheaper than Contax but these days it has brighter future. It has better viewfinder than both Contax and Mamiya, faster AF but it is more like modern DSLR - it is much more electronic than COntax, has different system of controls, it will (probably) not be able to work with 3rd party glass as Contax and Mamiya can (say you can use Pentacon 6 east german Zeiss glass). The major concern these days is that Kyocera practically abandoned Contax 645 system, there is no development at all, there is no new dedicated digital backs for it on horizon, Mamiya backs will not fit Contax. Mamiya had some little problems with film flattness in backs, but generally it is well comparable to Contax and if you have Mamiya you'll be probably OK.

More rigid platform, plus ergonomically I think it is the best camera ever built. Speaking about Mamiya system it is comparable to Contax but with some litte differencies. you can check Ebay for Contax and Mamiya glass prices and you'll see for yourself what is what. Mamiya glass is OK but not moe than that, typically for portraiture it does matter that much, for landscapes and product work it does matter. Optically Zeiss glass cutted by Kyocera is superb end of story.

All systems do have their minuses and pluses. Well, has countless discussions of same sort. I had a chance to try both systems plus H1. If you want or need to do Studio work a lot and Flash in general, the Hasselblad H1 might make a better choice with its leaf shutter. Both of them had good film backs, the Contax had the Vacuum insert for 220, and the Macro accessories for the Contax are better than the Mamiya. The Metering on the Mamiya are a bit more critical than the Contax. On the other hand, the Mamiya body feel more solid ( and quite a bit heavier ) and with a fixed eye prism feel more robust ( only my own observation ). They had roughly the same coverage in term of focal lengths and varieties except Zoom where mamiya had a pair to cover the std and long reach while Contax had only the 45-90. Both of them are first rate tools, the Zeiss Optics are arguably producing better pictoral quality and operate better in MF/AF integration. I own neither of the system, but work with them routinely enough to voice a few option. It's simply a matter of the larger the media, the more data being recorded for the same scene. You will first find the result kind of plain, but after close examination, you will find that you are having vastly improved quality over the smaller formats. Let's put the conclusion out front - if you are coming into medium fromat from smaller ones ( 35mm or Digital ) It doesn't matter which system you choose.
